Tulip Festival with Lilly Pulitzer – Holland, MI Pt. 1

Recently, I have been checking out pictures of people traveling the world. I have always admired their courage, independence, and outlook on life. They seem to be empowered and their positive attitudes are contagious. It inspires me to go out there and experience new places first hand. One thing in particular that has caught my eye recently are people visiting Holland in the Netherlands.  Many of the pictures this time of year are featuring their tulip festival, which is known to be the largest tulip festival in the world. I can only imagine how fun it must be there!

With a little desperation to have some tulip festival fun for myself, I started searching for them stateside. I could not believe that there is literally a tulip farm/festival only a few short hours away in the small town of Holland, Michigan….. and the city’s name is not a coincidence. Many parts of the town have very strong likeness to the Holland region of the Netherlands. I knew right away we had to visit this place!

Fast forward… I’m beyond thrilled as soon as we got there. We went during their annual Tulip Time Festival and there were so many interesting things to do and see. The town was packed with tourists and locals attending the festival. They had parades, concerts, authentic food, and hundreds of people wearing their Dutch costumes and wooden shoes. It almost feel like I am in another country! Our time was quite limited so we headed to the Windmill Island Gardens. And yes… there is a real windmill that was shipped over from the Netherlands back in the 1960’s! The 250+ year old windmill, named De Zwaan, is also the only authentic, working Dutch Windmill in the United States. You can find more information about the windmill here or here.

The surprises just kept coming. The town boast 5 million tulips each year. Every corner of this town has blooming tulips displaying every color you could possibly want to see. There were over 200,000 tulips lining the downtown streets on a 6 mile tulip lane.

We had such an incredible time! I was overwhelmed and mesmerized with everything I saw. The downtown area has a huge selections of boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and parks. The energy of this town is so charming and everyone we met welcomed us with a smile.  I could go on and on… but I will stop right here and I let you judge by some of the additional pictures. By the way, it’s not over yet. The tulip farm is open until October and I’m telling you it is well worth the trip!
