Five Ways to Start Your Day Happy!

Hi Guys,

I was recently out traveling to work on few projects.  By the end of the week I was so drained from all the activity and I literally had to drag myself out of bed. When the alarm would go off it was as if two people were arguing with myself on what to do, haha! It reminded me of my college days when I would be up at all hours studying and working towards a goal.  So, I decided it was time to go back to some of the habits I turn to when I’m tired or stressed.

Here are my 5 tips how to start your day happy.

1. Choose an alarm clock ringtone that makes you want to dance!

There are variety of apps out there (click here) that you can download to your phone that allow you to choose your type of music.  Choose something that has a strong beat with some positive lyrics that makes you want to move. This helps shift your grumpy morning mood to a feel-good attitude. My favorite morning soundtracks are “Footloose” (Kenny Loggins), “Can’t Stop the Feeling” (Justin Timberlake), and “Happy” ( Pharrell Williams).

2. Focus on one positive thought.

Starting your day with a positive thought gives yourself that boost of confidence that you can and you will. It helps drive out negative. Think about whatever your current goal is or maybe even your new year’s resolution…whether it is to get up and work out, make sure you’re on time, fresh and prepared for work/school, or to get up and make a healthy breakfast.  If you can bring your half-asleep mind towards your goal you’re more likely to get up with a good attitude that will allow you to get things done.

3.Take a warm shower and rinse with cool water.

Of course, we all know that nothing is more relaxing than a hot shower.  But, try following it up with a shot of cold water even if it is just to your face. The rush of cool water to your body promotes circulation, releases endorphins and boosts your happy mood.

4. Do a five-minute meditation. 

This is one of the best ways to relieve stress before you start your day. I usually turn on my Pandora music using the ocean wave station. Make sure you sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, breathe naturally and clear your mind for five minutes. This practice helps me relax, stay calm and be more aware of myself.  You could try doing this while your morning coffee or tea is brewing to save time.

5. Let the sun shine on your face.

It is well known that sunlight has so many health benefits such as helping build strong bones, cancer prevention, and a moderate amount can treat several types of skin condition. But, the benefit goes far beyond that… sun exposure contributes to releasing serotonin which will elevate your mood. This hormone is also known as the happiness hormone. A lack of sun exposure is one of the reasons why people sometimes feel down during the winter, so open up those windows when you wake up!

#1 is sooo true. I use to wake up to the horrible beep sound and I would wake up annoyed. I then switched to the radio and I'm no longer annoyed!

Thanks Melissa- you definitely should! We all get in such a hurry sometimes in the morning. But if you stop and think everyone can spare 5 or so minutes to meditate...it is so worth it!

Haha thanks Rachel. I can't remember the last time I did that....to be honest it was my husband's idea aaaannnddd I might have been a little dizzy afterwards, but still so fun! :)

Absolutely! and it is so easy to forget in the winter time in some places! Let that sun shine!

I'm a big fan of Supernatural (the show) and in an episode they kept reliving the same morning over and over again. The song "Heat of the Moment" was the alarm on their clock radio. So, that's my alarm song now and it makes me giggle every morning. Lol. It was a good episode!
