Hi guys, I am currently in Mexico celebrating my one year wedding anniversary and my birthday! Since it is still wedding season and this day is very special to me; I would like to share an intimate portrayal of my own “trash the dress” experience with those about to walk down the aisle, and future brides-to-be.
A year ago my life consisted of nothing but eating, sleeping, and designing my three beautiful wedding dresses (hey, a girl only gets married once, right?). I first need to give a shout out to the fantastic staff at Bonaobra Couture, for putting up with me on my wedding dress designs! I was in constant contact with the designers there, going over everything with them from selection of fabrics, to the choice of lace, pearls and bling. I am very particular about every tiny detail of my gowns, the look, feel, cut and flow of the dresses, that I probably have asked them to change every aspect of it at least twice…. Maybe three times. But who’s counting!
Today, I am featuring the second dress from my wedding. I specifically chose the design of this dress to coincide with my underwater photo shoot. While designing it I was envisioning the style and movement of mermaids, and tried to incorporate that nautical, sexy vibe into the image. Specifically, I needed it to be lightweight, form fitting, and move in a way that the layers would not tangle together. The long sleeve design with laces gives the illusion of having a fin, while the slightly longer train makes it look like the tail. I was also particular about not wearing an additional jewelry except these earrings that I bought for $10. I didn’t want anything to distract from the dress! I had few rhinestones sewn into the sleeves and waist area, and the back buttons are also made of silver rhinestones, so I had enough bling! And of course, I was NOT going to take any risks by wearing my wedding ring.
After the wedding we flew into Mexico for the honeymoon, and chose to do the photo shoot at sacred well in the Riviera Maya. The sacred well is called Cenote- it is a fresh sink hole that provided the Mayan’s fresh drinking water for 2000 years. It is also believed to hold special powers, ancient energies, and is supposedly home to enchanted spirits. Hell Yeah!! This is definitely the type of place I wanted to feature this magical dress. The mystery and the unknown depths added to the fun and adrenaline rush. I admit, I was scared!
The day we got to the well I had countless “what-ifs” going through my mind… What if my dress gets caught under one of the stones and I can’t swim back up… What if my lightweight dress gets heavy since it’s filled with water…. What if the enchanted story is true and the spirits decided to keep me under the water! I know… Crazy. But hey… believe it or not I have never swam fully clothed in an ancient Mexican cave! A nice surprise- My husband who is usually on the other end taking pictures, decided to be with me in the shoot! Thank you to the marvelous team of Dean Sanderson Photography– they were very patient with us (especially with me). And of course, I could have not done this without my husband, who held my hand through the entire process, and lovingly reassured me that I was not going to die. Haha!
We decided to do the photo shoot early in the morning at 8 am to get the natural light going through the cave. The water was cold, but manageable since the weather outside was pretty warm! We were lucky enough to have that area exclusively for us (Not because we are important, but because it is wayyyy too early to swim for tourists, who were still in bed. After an hour of practicing how to swim under this cave, we finally started to feel comfortable, and started with the shoot. It was not bad at all! It was so much more fun than I thought. I felt like Ariel, The little mermaid. It was seriously one of my childhood dreams come true! To all the brides out there, you can add this to your adventure bucket list! This is something that you can look back someday and remember, Oh yeah!!!! That’s where the fun and adventure of marriage began! Xoxo
